Over There

I'm on fi-ah!! More than one post on the same day! In the same week! In the same month!

Anyway, I just wanted to share what has been one of the most influential records of my life. I usually don't go for live recordings too much, cos usually it's a "you had to be there" type thing, but this is somethin' else. Originally this was only a 6 track EP. But with the release of the Slash compilation "Testament", we got 4 more tracks recorded on this same date (May 22, 1982, at the Venue in London), plus the Alvin brothers doing a Jimmy Reed cover. I just wish that I had been at this show or seen the band during this period, which I think was their peak. This ain't technically punk rock, but it's punk rock to me.

Sun Records Collection Pt. 1

Back again, in case you didn't notice (ha ha). Sorry about the breather, it's just that sometimes I just don't feel like posting, and when you do something without desire, it becomes work, and I've promised myself never to make this into work. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Anyway, what can I say about Sun Records that you don't know already? This is the place that saw the beginning of King Elvis, the beginning of Howling Wolf, of Jerry Lee Lewis, of Johnny Cash, of Roy Orbison, of B B King. And of many others of which you've never heard, and this set is good precisely because of these "also-rans". They capture a moment in time and place where black blues and white hillbilly came together into one music. Call it rock n roll, call it what you will, but it was good. And here it is in all its raw glory, crackle and pop and all.

Original Cool

Three posts on the same day, can you believe it? Quite the accomplishment for this accomplished slacker!!

This is the last album recorded by the Stray Cats on their first "run". Originally released only in Japan, it was later to reappear in the United Kingdom. Recorded in Los Angeles in early 1993, this is The Cats' tribute to early rockabilly. In the U.S. it is only available as an import, for around 70 bucks (yikes!!). Check it out, rockcats!!:

Fly Rite!!

TWO POSTS in ONE same day!!! I must be sick. Maybe I'll go for broke with a third... But don't hold your breath..

This is the second by Big Sandy and his Flyrite boys. They do rockabilly and traditional hillbilly swing, complete with Bob Will's "a-haw!!"'s punctuating the instrumental breaks.

Like the first one, this cd was also produced by the Blaster's Dave Alvin, and it was recorded at Capital studios, where Gene Vincent recorded many of his classics.

Get some sawdust on the floor and cut a rug - this is

The Have-Nots: >>X<< Part 2

Ok, so finally, I was able to upload cd2 through sendspace.com! X's Billy Zoom was always one of my guitar heroes. He was the baddest of the bad and the coolest of the cool, to quote Run DMC!! I even got a guitar that was the closest approximation to his Gretsch (that i could afford), a silver sparked Silverjet. Mine is a Dearmond, sparkle blue, big bigsby tremolo.

This is Billy with his Silverjet:

This is my Dearmond without me! :

Not too shabby, buddy!

Ok, and now, what you're really here for, the music:

Today's turn is for the late, great, Mr. Johnny Cash. This godfearing, pillpopping genius was a strange mix of holy, damned and hellbent. This is a 3cd set that documents his time recording at Sam Phillip's Sun Studios, where it all began.

Sun

For today, I thought I would share a compilation that had a big influence on me, "wayback". I bought this CD as part of one of these 11-cds-for-99-cents deals that Columbia House had. It features some very well known songs along w some lesser known classics.

This little southern studio, product of the vibrant Memphis scene that was, unwittingly launched a revolution, in the name of Elvis Aaron Presley.

I made my pilgrimage some years ago and it was strange, being in this space, this room, where this tragedy of a man that was E. P. once stood and belted out the rockers, swooned the heartbreakers, in the middle of a poor, slowpaced, hot southern town. Incidentally, on this day, I also saw Kiss at the big pyramid shaped colysseum there, just cos the scalped tickets were cheap, and cos the Melvins were the openers. And cos I have always wanted to rock and roll all night, and party every day. Duh.
