Chess, anyone?

Chess Records was an American record label based in Chicago, Illinois. It specialized in blues, R&B, gospel music, early rock and roll, and occasional jazz releases.

Run by brothers Leonard and Phil Chess, the company produced and released many important singles and albums, which are now regarded as central to the rock music canon. Musician and critic Cub Koda described Chess Records as "America's greatest blues label."

Chess Records was based at several different locations on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, the most famous being at 2120 S. Michigan Avenue from c. 1956 to c. 1965, immortalized by British rock group The Rolling Stones in "2120 South Michigan Avenue", an instrumental recorded at that address during their first U.S. tour in 1964; the Stones would record at Chess Studios on two more occasions. The building is now home to Willie Dixon's Blues Heaven Foundation.

This is something interesting I found the other day. Called "Conversations With Elvis Costello", it's a 2 cd promotional edition of Elvis Costello's "Imperial Bedroom" in which he discusses each song in detail before you hear it.

This, along with his first three, is one of my favorite EC albums. As is mentioned often, it was produced by Geoff Emerick, who also worked on "Sgt. Pepper's" as well as Paul McCartney's solo stuff. Even though it does feel a bit overambitious, some might say pretentious, it is a very satisfying, varied album, and very different than the rest of his stuff. Its sensibilities are more Cole Porter than Randy Newman, I guess you could say.

Anyway, even though the chats break up the flow of the songs (which is a key component, particularly in this album), it is worth it to hear new insights and behind the scenes info.

I always disliked Randy Newman, having only heard "I Love L.A" and such; had chalked him up to be just another Hollywood jingleoid songwriter. To a great extent, he is that. But he's also a masterful lyricist of an acrid intelligence and a black sense of humor.

I remembered reading an Elvis Costello interview in which he said that on his first album, "My Aim is True", he had basically done a Randy Newman imitation, so i got curious and downloaded "Guilty", a 2 cd greatest hits comp, and this is where I first heard songs like "Rednecks" and "Louisiana 1927". The former, sung in the voice of a racist southerner cliche, the latter to resurface as a premonitory foreshadowing of the tragic mess that was Katrina.

I don't usually go for concept albums, but in this case, like with Terry Allen, I make an exception.

"That's what I wanted-- I think my goal wasn't to get rich and famous, necessarily, though I cared about that. I always thought, "Oh, this could be a hit," or "that will sell records." But the first thing I wanted was that people who knew a lot about music, or had taste-making qualities, they would like my stuff. Writers, people like that. And I kind of got it, and realized, I want more! [laughs] It's always gratifying to me when someone like Elvis Costello mentions me, someone whose work I admire." (from PITCHFORK)

This is one of my favorite records of all time. The Descendents were (cue cliche) ahead of their time. Their pop punk stylings foreshadowed Greenday, the Offspring, Weezer and all the inane pap that was to follow (Blink 182 et al.).

After about 2 decades, I've been listening to this album a LOT again, and it's made me marvel at just how good they were. This to me is their best. It also marked the first appearance of lead singer Milo Aukerman, inspiration for the Milo character that was featured on most of their covers. And he was going off to college, hence the title (duh).

Later, they went more for the pop side of their sound, leaving behind their more creepy negative side - both in terms of lyrical content and the Black-Flag-influenced sound heard here.

Today I found out that founding member, guitarist, and the man responsible for their darker lyrics, Frank Navetta, passed away last Halloween (2008). He had quit the band back in 1958, burning all his gear to become a fulltime fisherman in Oregon.

So this entry becomes my belated tribute to Frank as well as to the Descendents. Rest in Peace.

I have been listening to Husker Du's Zen Arcade and Warehouse of late, and really, Grant Hart's tunes just haven't aged as well as Bob's songs. His new one is supposed to be coming out soon, so we'll see how it's sounding after the electronica a go go debacle that was his last one. It's supposed to be more guitar-rocking this time, which doesn't guarantee that it'll be good, mind you. I'm just glad he got over the clubby stage.

Not that he hasn't the right to. Like Chris Cornell, Bob is free to follow his bliss all he wants, but I'm not necessarily obliged to go there with him.

I'm on fi-ah!! More than one post on the same day! In the same week! In the same month!

Anyway, I just wanted to share what has been one of the most influential records of my life. I usually don't go for live recordings too much, cos usually it's a "you had to be there" type thing, but this is somethin' else. Originally this was only a 6 track EP. But with the release of the Slash compilation "Testament", we got 4 more tracks recorded on this same date (May 22, 1982, at the Venue in London), plus the Alvin brothers doing a Jimmy Reed cover. I just wish that I had been at this show or seen the band during this period, which I think was their peak. This ain't technically punk rock, but it's punk rock to me.

Well, today, being today, I was going to put up the Smithereen's christmas album from last year, but, respecting Totally Fuzzy's policies as I do, instead, here are two of their best albums, from 1986 and 1988. I first heard "Blood and Roses" as it played over the credits of some long-forgotten 80's movie, and I was instantly obsessed by the solo baseline hook throughout the song.

So, I bought the CD. I believe it was one of my first digital purchases, and I was awestruck by the crystal clear goodness of it all.

Anyway, "Especially For You" is a great, great pop album. "Green Thoughts", while not as good, has some amazing pop songs. Enjoy! Their latest two albums are great Beatles covers. As always, buy it/ if you /like it! (if you can)..

Back again, in case you didn't notice (ha ha). Sorry about the breather, it's just that sometimes I just don't feel like posting, and when you do something without desire, it becomes work, and I've promised myself never to make this into work. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Anyway, what can I say about Sun Records that you don't know already? This is the place that saw the beginning of King Elvis, the beginning of Howling Wolf, of Jerry Lee Lewis, of Johnny Cash, of Roy Orbison, of B B King. And of many others of which you've never heard, and this set is good precisely because of these "also-rans". They capture a moment in time and place where black blues and white hillbilly came together into one music. Call it rock n roll, call it what you will, but it was good. And here it is in all its raw glory, crackle and pop and all.

Often described as the "one-man Clash", Billy Bragg is much more than that. As much as I love "The Only Band That Matters", Billy's songs are political in a way that the Clash's songs never were, mining a much more personal and confessional vein. This record (which is actually his first two albums plus an EP on one CD), to me, has him at his best, and while it does contain some amazing protopunk-sounding tunes, for me his most affecting are songs like "A New England", "The Saturday Boy" and "A Lover Sings".

Before he was "The" Billy Bragg, he was in a band called Riff Raff. Whilst researching this post I found a nice blog with a complilation of their singles. So head on over to SOMENOISE if you want to check that out!!

Ok this one goes out to Bert! Since he's as big a Los Lobos fan as I am, here is a CD that they put out for children, featuring the spoken word narrative of one of their chicano heroes, Lalo Guerrero.

I wouldn't say it's a "proper" Lobos album, but a one-off experiment, and as such it has a couple of duds, but there's some rockin' music on it too, particularly "Buzz Buzz".

This here is one of my very favorite records of all of what we call time.

Bobby "Blue" Bland grew up in Memphis, and for a long time he and BB King played together. As a solo artist, he developed a style that was as much soul as it was blues, going from a smooth, Hammondlaced groove to a throatripping scream in the blink of an eye.

Anyway, this is, imho, his bestest of the bestest!! Standouts: Little Boy Blue, St. James Infirmary, I'll take care of you.

Mick Hucknall of Simply Red, surprisingly recorded a tribute to Bobby, which is his new album an his first solo project. It's a very interesting modern-day take on his songs. A little too clean, but worthwhile nonetheless. There's a youtube clip about that after the cut.

Biting My Nails

This record is back from 1989. Again, the culprits behind my finding out about this band was mtv's 120 minutes. When I heard "Biting My Nails", not only did I identify with the lyrics (and, unfortunately, I still do bite my nails, or rather, what is left of my freakish nubs), but I dug the Mark E Smith-y vocal delivery and the poppy hooks. Their latter more clubby dub stuff is interesting too, but I wish they had done more things along this line. Oh and the name of the band itself is one of the best ever:

This was my first Wedding Present album. I bought it because I had heard "Kennedy" and "Brassneck" in the heyday of MTV's 120 Minutes show (which, despite its string of annoying hosts - most notably, Dave Kendall and Matt Pinhead .. er, I mean, Pinfield -, was really good). Not as good as Seamonsters, but definitely a great, great album. And David Gedge has a heart of gold and is supernice, so go out and get this if you likey.

And then there's Terry Allen.

Terry is a conceptual multimedia country artist, if there is such a thing. Born in Kansas, bred in Lubbock, educated in L.A., and now in Santa Fe, Terry writes wry lyrics about art, good ole boys, pillpopping and the Nashville country establishment, among other things. And he's a sculptor. I actually got the chance to meet and talk with him when I was getting my mfa in New Orleans in 1997. Nice enough guy, very unassuming. At the time, I was undergoing a small existential conflict about Art, so when I heard this song on a wonderful country show on WWOZ, It really hit a nerve:

It weren't art...but it weren't bad

In the early 90's, the Afghan Whigs was (one of) THE band(s) for me. They had the punk rock at ti tude, the soul pimp swagger I never knew I admired, and their lyrics read like therapy session transcripts. True to form, the small notoriety achieved thus went to foreman Greg Dulli's head (sais I, anyhoo) and they fizzled like a humid leftover Alkaseltzer tab.

I see they're back now, but I haven't heard their new thang. Good luck to 'em! This is when I knew them best, loved them best, and whence they rocked my puny lil teenage world. Check out the Sally Mann-esque cover, too.

This is a record from 1985, by a bunch of friends from Leeds. Foreshadowing alt country by a decade, this was their 3rd album, and a comeback of sorts, having briefly disbanded after their 2nd, not very good album, recorded for Virgin records.

Founded in 1962 by Rafael Ithier, a member of Cortijo y Su Combo, they have been tearing the roof all over the world for over 4 decades (!). They have gone through many stages and incarnations, integrating many influences into the mashup that is SALSA; Boogaloo, swing, flamenco, tango, boleros, jazz; they've done it all.

These two greatest hits are good representation of "La Universidad de la Salsa" at their best.

This is a CD that my friend and colleague Victoria lent me by a Finley Quaye. I had read good things about him and had heard that he was Tricky's Uncle (although he was 24 when he recorded this) so I was curious. Eccentric pot-influenced stylee, heavy on the Uroy "appropriations", but with a different mood. Very mellow sometimes, sometimes more rocking, and a really good bassline= very nice. Check it. As I mentioned in the Vic Chesnutt post, I have been re-listening to some albums that I hadn't heard in more than a decade. Some have aged well and some ... not.
Kate Bush's "The Dreaming" has aged surprisingly well, while this video... hasn't. Harlequins, minotaurs and dunces - oh my!! Can you say "Low Budget"?:

Anyway, musically speaking, she was way ahead of her time. This was her first self-produced work. If Kate were more business savvy she could make a cheesy Broadway musical out of this and rake in the bucks, a la Yoko Ono, Bob Dylan, Mel Brooks etc. God bless her soul that she isn't.

Back from a long awaited and long overdue hiatus, aka vacation.

To celebrate, a reup requested by a Mr "Tobi" of Los Lobos live and acoustic in 2005. So here you go, bud. I re-equalized it from the original FLAC files, so if you downloaded this from here before, I do believe this sounds better.
Actually as part of my vacation I was just in Chiquinquirá, mentioned on the 6th track here, "El Cuchipe", which is a traditional Colombian/andean song:

"De Chichinquirá yo vengo de pagar una promesa / Ahorita que estamos solitos dame un besito Teresa"

It's a small town in the "departamento" of Cundinamarca. The Virgin of Chichinquira is the patron virgin of Colombia, and many people still to this day make long pilgrimages to, like the song says, pay off a promise.

Since getting my Ipod nano I have been relistening to a lot of things, and this album by Vic Chesnutt has been on the heaviest of rotations for some reason. The lyrics are silly/deep/troubling. His voice should be annoying but somehow isn't at all. The production and mix is just wonderful, with strange little sounds all over the place, very acousticsounding in a real way that I really like.

Here are the two first (and only?) albums by the Selecter, an 80's secondwave ska band who, along with the Specials, ran the Two Tone Records label. They didn't meet with as much success as their labelmates, but they were still a great band, for what they were. Distinctive for Pauline Black's great vocals, when the majority of the leading two tone ska groups had male vocals, these albums come from a very specific time and place, namely, 80's Britain. Although these albums do sound a bit dated and didn't age as well as I once expected, I still listen to them quite a bit, and perhaps so will you!!

This is the last album recorded by the Stray Cats on their first "run". Originally released only in Japan, it was later to reappear in the United Kingdom. Ok, technical problems all sorted out now. Back at ya with one of my favorite records of all time, The Wedding Present's Seamonsters. While their earlier work was punker and their latter work was some of the best pop rock ever, this strikes a perfect balance between the two. Recorded by noizemeister Steve Albini in just 12 days somewhere in the heart of Minnesota, Seamonsters is agreat cd full of texture, feedback not-for-feedback-sake, and excruciatingly personal lyrics. I read somewhere that WP frontman David Gedge's lyrics are like phone conversations with his lover, but I would say that they are more like breakup letters. Anyway, judge for yourselves:

David Gedge on Steve Albini:

He's a great engineer and apparently works pretty fast.
Gedge: It's weird because people say "how does he do it?" and it's very basic really, I mean it's kind of like old school in a way in that his heroes are people like George Martin and the BBC engineers. It's basically get a band, tune the drums, tune the guitar, it's all good equipment, it's an acoustically suitable room, great microphones, well-placed and he records it, and it's like, yeah it's kind of obvious really. Why change that? People spend six hours on the snare drum sound or longer and you've kind of lost the mood of a band playing together, you know?

Hey all. Sorry about the "vacation". But i am back at ya now, with a great, great album from 10 years ago. I listened a lot to this album back in 97, when I (and possibly you too?)was in my alt country phase. This is Richard Buckner's "Devotion + Doubt", his second. As they say here, "No tiene presa mala", meaning; there's not a clunker in the bunch, imho.

His newer disc, Meadow, from 06 is more of a rock thing, and it ain't bad at all, but THIS is pure gold. A beautiful, acoustic sounding record, intimate, depressing (yay!), one of my favorite albums from that time in my life. And beautifully designed packaging, too. Buy it HERE.

It's funny, I was just talking to someone about this yesterday. I'm working in a studio right now with a bluegrass band, producing their record. We were talking to the engineers, and one of the interns is a real young guy and he's talking about MP3s and the people behind all that, and he's like, well, these companies, they're not making any money off it. And I was like, what are you fucking talking about? You think people are doing this for nothing? If people weren't making money off this, they wouldn't be doing it, because that's the nature of the beast.Usually every night when I'm performing onstage, at some point I think, like, ‘isn't this fucking weird?’, I'm up here on a podium hollering and people are looking at me. This is a really weird fucking way to make a living. Or not, as the case may be, he adds wryly. And it is weird. You're up there facing a couple hundred people and they're facing you and you're up there hollering.. When you put it in those terms it's strange, and after doing it for nine months of a year you're like, ‘God, I can't believe this is what I do with my time.’

You know, the only reason I write is that I'm trying to figure things out in my own life. It comes from there. I'm trying to comfort myself or something.

Does it matter that your music matters to others?
No. If that matters, I think I'm in big trouble. Absolutely not. I don't give a fuck. And I tell people that too. They start telling me, ‘Well, you know, I thought this, I didn't think this.’

You know, I don't want to know this. Keep this shit to yourself! It's not important to anybody. Especially me. So keep it to yourself.
Look, if I'm talking to somebody I'm not going to be a dick and say, ‘hey, I don't want to hear what your favourite song is.’ But if people get too deep into it, I have to say, ‘Listen, this is not what this is all about. You know, take it for what it's worth and that's it. If it means a lot to you, great.

Surely there must be some songs which say something you want to say to someone else; surely there must be some people you want to hear a song and take a message from it. Buckner laughs, as much mocking as self-mocking.
I think it's kind of a cowardly way to tell somebody something you want to say to them, don't you? Like, ah fuck, give me a fucking break. Is that what you're doing, you're sending me like a secret note or something? Fuck. That's my whole problem with computers. People can get on there and write whatever they want and not leave their own name. You fucking coward! God damn. Put your name on there. If you're going to say something to somebody, so when you make these little glib nerdy-ass comments, we'll know who it's coming from, we can get down to business and see what your real fucking problem is.

Entre Casa y Babylon

Born in Spain, grown up in Paris, France, Manu Chao absorbed influences of all kinds - punk, hardcore, rockabilly, ska, dancehall reggae, flamenco, African music, RnB, etc.

Now a solo artist, this was the last album by his band Mano Negra. I first heard this when a penpal sent a TDK cassette of it to me when I was in college. This was one of my favorite albums for years.

While maybe not as palatable to english-speaking ears as to spanish/francophone ones, I think this CD from 1994 still holds up in a BIG way. Later, when I was in New Orleans and discovered all the great, unknown New Orleans 50's RnB, I found that the song "The Monkey Speaks His Mind" was not a Manu original, but a NOLA hit penned by Dave Bartholomew (which you will soon see here). Then, back here in Medellín, I discovered one of my favorite Cuban artists, Bola de Nieve (also to make a future appearance on HSR), and I recognized Bola's song "Drume Negrita" as being the original of "Mamá Perfecta"!! Talk about mindblowing!

This album was written between Paris, New York, Buenos Aires and Bogotá, after a crazy tour on a train that was transformed into a traveling circus that went from the Colombian Atlantic coast to Bogotá (and which some credit for the demise of the band).

The song "El Señor Matanza" ("Lord Massacre", kind of) was about the political/social climate at that time and still to a great extent, at this time (no matter what Prez Uribe would like you to believe). Including guest cameos from people like Fidel Nadal of (Argentina's answer to the Bad Brains) Todos Tus Muertos, and backing vocals from one Jello Biafra, you are respectfully invited for a stay at:

"Los Angeles" was the first "punk rock" record I ever bought and they have been one of my favorite bands since, throughout all their phases. They were, I think, one of the first truly "Americana" type bands, mixing punk, rockabilly and kitsch in a way that had never done before.

I have wanted to post this album (well, double album, actually) for a long time, since it is one of my favorite NYC salsa ouvres, a bonified classic, and pretty hard to find, I believe. It is the first of two releases from a supergroup of sorts, featuring, among many, the great Cuban trumpetplayer, Alfredo “Chocolate” Armenteros.

Founded on on December 4, 1969, this big band is an institution in Cuba. Led by bassist Juan Formell, they were the pioneers of a music called "timba" which mixes traditional Cuban music with jazz, rap, funk, and pop. This is a "best of" double CD I bought here in Medellín, which I doubt is an official release, but which I consider representative of their sound up til the late 90's. They are still around, with an ever changing lineup, touring the world despite the U.S. embargo (check out the two youtube videos in Miami, directly below the songlist!!). Enjoy.

I am taking advantage of this three day weekend here in Colombia to pretend that I am a prolific audioblogger. Is it working? Ok, well..

The Coup is a way underrated hip hop group from SF that do something which is almost impossible: mix politics and bootyshakin'. After surviving a horrible accident on their tourbus which destroyed all of their equipment, they have recently signed with punk rock label "Epitaph" and released "Pick a Bigger Weapon", which is their first label deal where they'll actually be making any dough, as their past labels stole them blind (how strange), so if you like THIS CD, you should buy THAT one, because they are worth supporting. This here is their first record, "Genocide and Juice", featuring some way funny, way scathing and way funky songs. I am particularly fond of "Pimps", which trascends at a posh soirée where J. Paul Getty, Donald Trump and David Rockerfeller bust out rhymin'.
